About the job

Why We Exist

The Indian internet has exploded. Over half a billion Indians will be online before the end of this year. Most of these Indians will prefer using their own language online. And next to nobody is building solutions for them. They are prevented from using the internet to its fullest potential because English forms a language barrier. Whenever they visit a site or app, they are met with a wall of text in a language that they do not understand. We at Reverie believe in language equality on the internet. It’s what drives us and gives what we do meaning. Language equality basically means that every Indian should enjoy the same range of options and experiences online in their own language that an English speaker does online.

What We Do

We take immense pride in the fact that we tackle some of the most complex and impactful problems Indian language users currently face today. We’re working towards our mission of language equality by building a full-stack of language technologies and solutions, spanning fonts, font rendering, transliteration, translation, app & website localization in real-time, Indian language input (check out our Swalekh keypad on the App Store here), Indian language voice assistants, and Indic search, to empower the Indian language user and let them tap into the possibilities the internet offers them.

We are adopters of leading OSS cloud stacks like Netflix OSS and Spring Cloud for building resilient, fault tolerant and scalable products. Our developers believe in giving back to the community and are actively involved in the OSS projects through pull requests or technical discussions.

The micro services developed in Java are based on Spring Boot, therefore Spring is our preferred framework. The micro services are usually exposed through a REST API and are consumed through SDKs or by our own web applications which are usually built in ExtJS. Our engineers are familiar with multiple build and deploy pipelines. We implement Continuous Delivery by using tools like Maven, Jenkins, Selenium, Cucumber and JMetter, Pact, Nexus and deploying our services through Chef recipes on a hybrid cloud offered by Amazon AWS.

  6. Knows how to build services that scale, in general is familiar with how to implement architectural concerns like availability, layering, reliability, reuse, serviceability and security
  7. Cares about code quality and craftsmanship; enjoys aspects like code review, static code analysis, pyramid of tests, test automation to a high degree
  8. Is a product developer; cares about his products and about the customers; wants to be involved in all the SDLC and beyond and consistently questions if what is going to be built is going to bring value to his customers
  9. Is a firm believer in freedom and responsibility; this continues to be a core principle in what we do here in Language Cloud and RWS Cluj
  10. Knows how to get things done and learned that make it run then make it right then make it fast is a good recipe for quick delivery
  11. Wants to be part of a Scrum team that is highly self-organized, owns micro services from inception to production support (you build it, you run it mentality) and is in synch with other Scrum teams implementing Scaled Agile Framework
  12. Believes that in modern software development attitude and motivation plus ability to learn fast is more important than skills and expertise
  13. Takes time to sharpen the saw and to enjoy the journey
Life at RWS - We work hard together to deliver for our customers; our expertise, professionalism and determination to never let others down drives  us to be passionate and serious about what we do, deliver customer value, yet always adding a human touch

Currently, Memrise is taking full advantage of advances in machine learning and other AI technologies to leapfrog to an entirely new level. By using the latest and greatest technologies the world has to offer, Memrise is increasing the content we can use for the purpose of learning a language by many orders of magnitude. We are building machines to speak to our users in 50+ languages.

Your mission

Most importantly, it will require the ability and desire to coach and develop Memrise’s technology team so they can deliver on these ambitions with joy and efficiency.

This is the perfect role for you if you're interested in:

  • Establish goals that help meet Memrise's needs, set a high standard for success, and draw on the strengths of team managers
  • Manage the development of improvements to the platform architecture
  • Cultivate and coach technology leaders that will report up through delivery-aligned teams to team leaders that may not be technologically inclined
  • Mentor ‘Guild Leaders’ that can expertly manage teams of people from like disciplines (e.g., iOS, Android, etc.) to foster camaraderie and skill sharing in spite of being deployed across delivery-aligned teams
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to engineers in order for them to reach their full potential
  • Define processes and procedures so that they are executed effectively by others
  • Partner with other teams to ensure alignment towards achieving company goals and delivery of the highest quality product
  • Ensure technologies are used efficiently, profitably, and securely
  • Manage budgets and resources
  • Help create hiring plans and support with recruitment (e.g., interviewing potential candidates)

  • Experience in a CTO, VP of Technology, and/or Principal Architect position, ideally having experience with building and running a SaaS in a start up / scale up and across some of the following: Video Content, Social, Commerce, Community, Games, etc.
  • Ability to think strategically and anticipate technology needs 6-12+ months down the road
  • Capable of driving complex technology shifts, including the ability to break down complex innovation processes and projects into clear, ambitious, and realistic strategies for execution so they can be built rapidly and tested as MVPs
  • Proven track record of shipping cross-platform apps to Android, iOS, and the web
  • Past experience as a hands-on software engineer, ideally on backend systems
  • Ability to take concepts from vision to technical solutions working with business, technical, management, and subject matter experts to deliver products or platform capabilities

100-day journey

    • An assessment of current team capabilities and resource gaps
    • An actionable proposal on how we can integrate AI and Machine learning technologies to meet our deliverables in both immerse and communicate experiences initially
  • Build a proposed technology roadmap that encompasses both infrastructure changes for the long-term vision and quarterly delivery of improved cross team technical efficiencies
Benefits

Who are we?

Memrise is a popular and established global language learning tool with a unique brain-science-backed pedagogy.

Our goal is to "Help people acquire a language, profitably."

For the foreseeable future, Memrise is intensely focused on three strategies to accomplish this goal:

  1. Land all three legs of our pedagogical stool (Learn | Immerse | Communicate)
  2. Become the greatest language content company
  3. Dramatically grow registrations
All of these things require a volume of content that is many orders of magnitude greater than we have today. The only way we will get to the scale we need to deliver on these three strategic initiatives is to use the latest and greatest technologies to gather and deploy this content in an orderly manner and have a solid infrastructure behind it.

We want to make people’s lives better by helping people learn to hold a conversation with, and genuinely understand native speakers in a multitude of languages.

We believe that better communication between people across the world from different backgrounds will contribute towards making it a better place.

With over 60m user accounts, an App Store rating of 4.7/5 and Google Play rating of 4.6/5 from 1.5million reviews, and millions of daily active users, we’re an ambitious digital company in the exciting and ever-growing EdTech industry.

A key part of our product appeal lies in the humour of our content, and in authentically understanding diversity and nuances across cultures and what appeals to different people. So if you’re looking for a role that’s less big-corporate and where being yourself is regarded as an asset: we strongly suggest you consider applying!

What’s the working environment like?

After two years of being away from the office, we’re gently transitioning to a hybrid working environment.

Since COVID hit, we’ve prioritised the welfare of our staff and so - to date - office attendance has been voluntary (although incentivised with catered food, learning events and parties!). It’s worth noting our office location is on the doorstep of Spitalfields market in London with its delicious and varied lunchtime food offerings! Historically, we’ve been a very sociable company with plenty of parties, and where colleagues become great friends.

The future of what work looks like continues to remain an active conversation, but across the company we’ve committed that teams will not be expected into the office more than two days a week. In practice, this is likely to be less, as we adapt pragmatically in a changeable world.

You’ll join our London team of open-minded, big-hearted, goal-oriented ‘Memrisians’, made up of linguists, developers, designers, marketers and more, all working together to do great things. Get in touch if you want to join the team.

What are some of the benefits?

  • Share options, so you can retire on an island
  • Generous Learning and Development budget for training, conferences, books and L&D leave
  • Enhanced Parental Leave
  • Flexible working options
  • Private health insurance with Vitality, and related perks (50% off a Virgin and Nuffield Health Gym memberships)
  • Dental insurance with Unum
  • Language classes with in-office and virtual tutors
  • Cycle-to-work scheme
  • Remote talks, socials, and parties
We’re an equal opportunity employer. If it’s okay, we’re not going to list examples of people and groups we don’t discriminate against. We don’t discriminate, full stop. We celebrate.

  • Experience on an on-call rota for a critical production system
  • Experience with declarative configuration management systems such as Terraform

Benefits

Is this you?

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer who is keen on designing, building, deploying, and operating the Memrise backend systems that help people around the world learn new languages, enriching their minds so they can enrich their world.

This is a great time to join our team. We are rolling out a completely new learning experience and doing some fascinating work in using the world’s video content to immerse people in the languages they are learning. We are seeking someone who listens to others, offers their own wisdom, and then rolls up their sleeves to do the work, bringing others along with them.

Can you tell me more about Memrise’s tech?

Our backend is primarily Python with some Django, hosted in the cloud using Kubernetes. All our infrastructure is configured with Terraform, and we have a continuous deployment pipeline for most systems including the backend and website. Currently, we’re using MySQL but are looking at re-architecting our database as part of company ambitions to significantly scale our product and content.

What will I be accountable for?

  • Working with in-house and external engineering teams to design and implement new features in the Memrise platform
  • Identifying ways to improve the Memrise user experience by improving our backend code and then bringing it to fruition
  • Accelerating engineering, product development, and the business at Memrise by improving the tools we use day-to-day and building new ones
  • Providing technical leadership to more junior engineers, whether through mentorship, delegating larger projects, and/or extending guidance around design
  • Raising the bar around software development at Memrise
Here’s a preview into what you’d be working on—within 90 days, you will have:

  • Developed and deployed a significant new area of functionality in the Memrise backend application that integrates the existing product with a new, separate strategic workstream
  • A working understanding of the Memrise backend, data pipeline, and their supporting infrastructure
Requirements

What are the key technical requirements for this role?

  • Extensive experience developing scalable, mission critical transactional systems using Python
  • Solid commercial experience building successful web applications and working on sophisticated data pipelines
  • Deep knowledge of high-traffic systems and scaling applications with several million monthly active users
  • Solid, hands-on knowledge and experience working with relational databases, such as MySQL or PostgreSQL
  • Working knowledge of modern testing practices
  • Experience running and debugging production systems
  • Ability to get things done quickly and correctly, even in unfamiliar areas
  • Excellent written communication skills, as evidenced in design documents, bug reports, code reviews and the like
  • A genuine passion for technology, what it can do and how it can be pushed to its limits
Nice-to-have (though we can provide on-the-job training for all of these!)

  • Excellent understanding of modern DevOps / SRE practices
  • Experience on an on-call rota for a critical production system
  • Experience with declarative configuration management systems such as Terraform
  • Experience configuring and managing AWS services
  • Experience developing services deployed as containers, ideally running on Kubernetes
